For the filling:
- 6 medium Bramley or Granny Smith apples (or other tart apples), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 50g granulated sugar (adjust to taste based on apple sweetness)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
For the crumble topping:
- 175g plain flour
- 100g granulated or brown sugar
- 100g cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
- A pinch of salt
- Optional: 50g rolled oats for added texture
Method
- Prepare the filling: In a bowl, mix the apple slices with sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Spread the mixture evenly in the baking dish.
- Make the Crumble Topping: In another bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt.
- Rub the cold butter into the flour mixture with your fingers until it resembles breadcrumbs. If using oats, stir them in once the mixture has a crumbly texture.
- Assemble: Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are soft and bubbling.
- Serve warm, ideally with custard, cream, or vanilla ice cream.
