Apple Crumble

Indulge in a comforting classic with this classic apple crumble recipe. Juicy, spiced apples are topped with a buttery, crumbly layer that bakes to golden perfection. Simple yet satisfying, it’s the perfect dessert for chilly days, especially when served warm with custard, cream, or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Serves 4

For the filling:

  • 6 medium Bramley or Granny Smith apples (or other tart apples), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 50g granulated sugar (adjust to taste based on apple sweetness)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

For the crumble topping:

  • 175g plain flour
  • 100g granulated or brown sugar
  • 100g cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
  • A pinch of salt
  • Optional: 50g rolled oats for added texture

Method

  1. Prepare the filling: In a bowl, mix the apple slices with sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Spread the mixture evenly in the baking dish.
  2. Make the Crumble Topping: In another bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Rub the cold butter into the flour mixture with your fingers until it resembles breadcrumbs. If using oats, stir them in once the mixture has a crumbly texture.
  4. Assemble: Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples.
  5. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are soft and bubbling.
  6. Serve warm, ideally with custard, cream, or vanilla ice cream.
