Our Accommodation
It’s not often that you hear people singing the praises of
a dual carriageway but in Ashburton, the whole town is grateful
that the A38 was laid over the old railway track in the valley in
the 1950’s. Because it meant that the small town centre, home
to 1300 residents, is almost as it was some 200 years ago. Many
of the Georgian-fronted houses conceal older buildings dating back
to the 11th Century. And during Elizabethan times it was a place
of great importance as a Stannary town, assaying the tin from the
mines. There is the Exeter Inn, a favourite haunt of Sir Walter
Raleigh, and the plaque near the ironmongers (A R Church) where
General Fairfax was arrested.
Hare’s Lane Cottage at 76 East Street (above), where you
will find our office, dates in parts from the 12th Century with
latest additions in 1701 and Ashburton Court at 79 East Street (below)
is a Georgian Merchant’s house with a stunning Victorian conservatory
restored in 1992. Ashburton Court was the original site of the Cookery
School started in 1994 by Stella West-Harling. Ashburton Cookery
School has rooms and suites available for Students. These are within
the two properties making up the School buildings.
